Process engineering | Projecting your career

Process engineering focuses on the design, operation and handling of facilities in the process industries. It incorporates tool and machinery design, electrotechnics and chemical engineering and shares some common ground with instrumentation.
Process engineering in Oil, Gas and Petro-Chemicals
From the outset, Process engineering is involved in the conception phase of projects for plant construction, e.g. in the chemical and petrochemical industries. Ideas are discussed and first drafts are created. Process engineers accompany a project through all phases, from the so-called front-end FEED through basic and detail engineering to commissioning.
In addition to concept development, process engineers are involved in the preparation of mass and energy balances and flow diagrams (P&IDs). They carry out hazard analyses (HAZOP/LOPA), as well as simulations. The planning activities are carried out with tools such as Ansys, Hysis, ChemCad and Aspen.
