Health, safety & environment (short HSE) deals with devising and implementing appropriate procedures for environmental protection, occupational health and safety at work.
Health, Safety and Environment in Oil, Gas and Petro-Chemicals
HSE interfaces with all disciplines in engineering, thus also with occupational safety and environmental protection in companies and on construction sites in the oil and gas and petrochemical industries. On site, the HSE officer is responsible for health and safety on a daily basis. He or she arranges toolbox meetings and, if necessary, special training sessions. During the construction phase, the engineers in charge arrange for last-minute risk analyses (LMRA) before work begins and, where necessary, for the work permit to be checked. Routinely, they check the weather conditions and stop work if safety concerns arise.
Before the start of the project, the HSE engineer organises safety briefing and training for all project personnel. Before entering the construction site, tools, equipment and devices, including personal protective equipment (PPE), are inspected. The HSE department also determines the EX zones, fire extinguishing systems and escape and rescue routes. HSE makes sure that the specified safety and authority guidelines are observed, for example on the basis of the German Federal Water Act (WHG) or in regard to hazardous substances (RoHS). HSE management systems are based on ISO 14001:2004.
